ICIEA2021 Special Session on Advanced Techniques and Emerging Applications of Modular Multilevel Converters

Session Organizers: Prof. Jinyu Wang and Prof. Shunfeng Yang

CALL FOR PAPERS

Modular multilevel converter (MMC), because of its salient features, such as high modularity structure, flexible expandability, low switching losses, excellent output waveforms and easy fault-tolerant operation, has become one of the most promising voltage source converters (VSCs) in recent years for high-voltage-high-power applications, such as HVDC transmission systems, medium voltage motor drives, power electronics transformers, and energy routers etc., and received lots of attention in the past decade, from both academia and industry.

Despite all these distinctive advantages and the wide potential application prospect, MMCs demand a more complex analysis method, design algorithm and control system compared with traditional VSCs. In addition, MMCs are still with great potential in emerging applications, for instance, microgrids with high renewable penetration that need frequency support, medium voltage power system for marine vessels, railway power supply. This Special Issue is focused on the latest research achievements of modular multilevel converters as well as their emerging applications.

Topics of interest of this Special Issue include, but are not limited to:

(1) Circuit topology variations

(2) Advanced modulation and control of modular multilevel converters

(3) MMC distributed control and control system optimization

(4) MMC in microgrids with high renewable penetration

(5) Fault analysis and tolerant

(6) MMC for electrified transportation

(7) Integration of renewable energy and energy storage with modular multilevel converters

(8) Applications in HVDC, MTDC, FACTS, motor drives, power electronic transformers, smart grid, etc.
